The Rantings of an Over-Caffeinated Web Developer

Paniris is Coming!

Today is the day that the Paniris Web Development paperwork gets filed (i swear… no more foot dragging). This means that hopefully by the week’s end, I can start making some purchases in the businesses name. My first project Online Christmas Gift List will be receiving a MAJOR overhaul. I’m talking about new graphic design, new programming, and even a new domain (I’ll announce that AFTER I actually purchase it). And all of this of course needs to be completed within a month’s time (My birthday is my personal deadline.. Aug. 22nd). This aint no joke folks… A full site redesigned and programmed, not to mention some good link building really needs to happen to get my PR up (I’d LOVE to get a PR5 for this site…). I’m trying to stay with the low-cost link directories & plain old link trading, but I might actually have to purchase some text links (on good PR sites of course) until the end of the year. And then of course you have google adwords. I will be using google adwords to find out the *sweet spot* for the price on the Christmas List. Can’t charge too much, or people won’t buy. It’s all a learning process though, so If no one buys I will be dissapointed, but not completely crushed.

Oh yeah, If anyone out there is interested in putting up a text link on their site, let me know and we’ll talk about how I might be able to compensate you. (Leave comment!)

Steve Jobs ain’t so bad after all?

So rumor has it that Steve Jobs is just as heartless as Bill Gates. While that may be true, you have to give credit to Jobs. He personally called the father of the teen who was killed for his iPod to give his condolences. So today my hat goes off for Steve Jobs.

Multiple Google AdSense Ads on One Page?

Posted in Random
by kposey on the July 1st, 2005

According to the Adsense Support docs:

Can I display more than one set of Google ads on a web page?

Currently, AdSense publishers may place up to three ad units on one web page. Our system will detect the multiple ad units and will display unique ads to each ad unit. This system is optimized for pages with highly targeted Google ads - some pages may not show ads in the second or third ad unit. In this case, the ad unit will show as a transparent box, or will contain any alternate ad or color specified in the ad code.

But I have tried adding multiple ads to one page, and I can only get 1 ad per page! Is there some sort of trick involved for showing additional ads? Would this trick be a setting in my adsense account, or part of the javascript code they send?

Making PHP Sessions Transparent

I think my server might just have this configuration option set, which is causing the PHPSESSID=d66b01bfda72d452f811a7f324bb9ec0 to be appended to my urls. I should just be able to put the following code in my site to remove that pesky request string. ini_set(use_trans_sid, 0); Then again, it might just be time to find a new web host. Can we say php5 support?

LLC Paperwork & Being Efficient

Posted in Random
by kposey on the June 30th, 2005

I have got to get my LLC paperwork filed soon. I’ve been sitting on the forms for a little over a month now, waiting on the necessary capital to fall in my lap, and now that its here, I’m not ready.

Let’s be honest. I should have filled out the paperwork as soon as I printed it off the indiana secretary of state website. But instead, i just let it sit on the counter for a couple weeks, and then in my laptop bag in a couple weeks. In fact, I just finished filling out the paperwork 3 days ago. And by paperwork I mean one small page. I should have also made the necessary copies, and stuck it into an envelop, with a stamp, so that all I had to do is drop the check in there, and pop it in the mail.

This sort of inefficiency really agitates me. I realize that I probably have more dreams than the make-a-wish foundation, but my inability to focus and followthrough in a timely manner is really baffling. In other area’s of my life (freelancing and work) I generally have no problem with focus and execution, but when it comes to my own stuff I think my pride and perfectionism takes over. It’s like I’m boycotting my own efforts in order to reduce the amount of failure I might encounter.

In the coming weeks, I am going to try and work on getting things done. My success as an ebusiness entrepreneur depends on it.

iBook Refresh Wishlist

In the Apple community, I think the hottest hardware speculations are for the next iBook refresh.  Most of the stuff on thinksecret.org point to a possible June 26th refresh date. I presume the estimates are based upon Apple wanting to generate some press during the National Education Computing Conference starting on June 27th.  Unfortunately for me, I just bought my iBook in March, and would have no reason to upgrade to a new one yet.  Unless of course I can convince my wife that she needs an iBook over a Mac Mini… which really shouldn’t be too hard.  I think she likes my iBook almost as much as *I* like my iBook.

Anywhoo, the iBooks are overdue for a refresh, and this is what I think they should be bumped up to.

  • 1.33/1.4ghz
  • 512mb RAM (1 stick)
  • 60gb Hard Drive
  • Display Spanning (not mirroring)

What Happened?

For all 3 of you out there who are now wondering "What happened to Kyle’s old website?", here is my official explanation. My old site was stale, and I wanted a way to keep my site current with all of my latest thoughts and activities. A blog seemed like the most obvious solution, and I decided WordPress would best suit my needs.  Besides, one of my latest programming projects has been WordPressDash, which is a blogging widget for Apple’s Tiger operating system (OS X 10.4).

I was tired of the old site anyways.
